Question:
Train Tickets to Liverpool?
?

My friend and I really want to go to a Liverpool FC Match on the 15th December 2010. The actual tickets for the match are pretty cheap, since it isn't a big game, and should be quite easy to get, but we're having real difficulty with travel arrangements. The game is a night game (8-10pm), and we don't particularly want to stay the night in Liverpool. All the train tickets I've found so far are about £250+, which is apparently cheap (?), and the return journey is at something like 4am, which is a bit late, we are looking for something getting there around 18:30 perhaps, and leaving around midnight or a bit before.
Bus tickets are very cheap, but the fastest takes about 5 hours, which means we'd be pretty pushed for time to say the least, and have a loong journey home.
So, is there anywhere I can actually get some train tickets which cost less than, say, £100?! My searches so far keep leading me to the same providers, so not getting very far.

I think you're almost certainly going to have to stay over.

I'm presuming you are travelling from london although you've not actually said.

The last train to London from Liverpool leaves at about 8.40 (or around half time in the game if you like) and even Manchester's last train back down goes at 9.15 pm.

www.thetrainline.co.uk is usually one of the best sites for finding tickets though - and you should be able to get them much cheaper than £250. A tip for using the site though - sometimes if you buy two single tickets it works out cheaper than buying a return. Also on services where there is likely to be a high demand (eg to Liverpool when the reds are at home) second class fills up really quickly and the price for vacant seats starts to rocket - sometimes it is actually cheaper to book a single in first.

If you are going to stay over Liverpool has lots of good and also budget hotels - but again these do tend to fill up when there is a match on (DONT WHATEVER YOU DO GO TO THE ADELPHI)

Match tickets should be available for the Utrecht game with it being a midweek Europa tie - what you might want to consider though is one of the packages that thomas cook do - which involves an overnight stay any your match ticket - could work out good value for you

at present they're offering overnight hotel and match ticket packages for 99 for that game i think and you can book a more reasonable train ticket the next day -

If you're aged between 16-25, then you will qualify for a Young-Person's discount card, where you can get 33.3% off the standard price. There are also some great discount offers with Transpennine Express Trains (http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/tickets/students/?1222800827) when you buy an advance ticket. If you would like to travel to Liverpool on a Transpennine Train, then you would be able to connect to these from Leeds or Manchester, or Sheffield (with a change at Manchester).

If you decide to do this option, then you would then need to buy another ticket for your journey between London - Manchester/ Leeds/ Sheffield. All I can advise is the sooner you book your train ticket, the cheaper. Why not check out: www.eastcoast.co.uk/, particularly for travel to Leeds. Or maybe: www.virgintrains.co.uk.

Obviously traveling by train is quicker, but have you considered traveling by coach? Apparently, if you travel by National Express (http://coach.nationalexpress.com), if you leave London Victoria at 10:30, you can arrive in Liverpool at 16:10, 5h40. For one person this can be as cheap as £13 return! (Funfare on 05/11/10) - But you would have to stay 1 night in Liverpool, maybe you could find a cheap hotel, like Travelodge or something?: http://www.travelodge.co.uk/.

Hope that was useful? : )

£250 from London to Liverpool; Absolute nonsense!. Advance purchase tickets should be about

one sixth of that, but there will not be any trains running at Midnight; you'll have to wait until the first trains the following morning. I suggest you visit the ticket office at Euston Station (assuming you're starting from London) and buy advance purchase tickets valid for specific trains or use this website

www.virgintrains.co.uk

Railcards will give you a further 34% discount www.railcard.co.uk

www.trainline.com for cheap advance tickets.

Consider getting a train to somewhere reasonably local after the match and stay in a cheap B&B overnight before continuing your journey home early the next morning.

Maybe consider taking half a day off before and after the match to allow you to travel more cheaply and avoid the rush.

Also, there's www.bigbus.com and nationalexpress.co.uk to consider. They may even put on special bus services before/after matches.

Consider driving and sharing the petrol/parking costs (obviously you wouldn't be able to drink, but if keeping costs down/getting to from the match without spending lots/taking time off work is your top priority, it might be your best option).

once you're prepared to shuttle on particular trains then advance tickets would be maximum inexpensive. There ought to nevertheless be advances obtainable yet weekend/economic business enterprise holiday centers might have run out or be unavailable as a results of engineering works. it may additionally seem that there is a undertaking with the fares device on NRE the main inexpensive stroll-up value ticket would be a London Midland in basic terms off height return yet traveling via London Midland will value you in terms of time and you will might desire to alter at Crewe. once you're eligible for a railcard then i could propose finding into getting one. besides because of the fact the 33% off reported via the different poster railcard holders could additionally shuttle at height situations on an off-height value ticket (In different words a ~£250 every time return turns right into a £40 six.20 off-height return valid at any time). additionally in August there's no minimum fare for railcard holders
